Our top 5 tips for designing small spaces

Often when designing interior spaces we tend to focus our creativity (and our budgets) on the areas that have the biggest footprints in homes - like living rooms and kitchens, but just because a space is small doesn’t mean it cant have a big impact - see below for our 5 tips on creating small spaces with big personalities

Tip #1. Be bold, go dark

Its a common misconception that black will close in a space and make it feel smaller, but often this is not the case. Black can open up a space by making walls disappear, your eye will see through black as opposed to white which is a hard stop - black walls are brave choice but can be one of the easiest (and cheapest) way to add some serious glamour to a space

Tip #2. Statement Lighting

We like to think of this as the jewellery of a room, lighting has the ability to completely transform a space whether big or small. Hang a beautiful pendant over a casual dining table in the kitchen nook and the space instantly feels elevated, frame a mirror in the powder room with a gorgeous wall sconce (or two) - the options are endless

Tip #3. Add Texture

Think of this in terms of dressing a room - can you add a beautiful runner to your butlers pantry to add interest and define the space, some feather cushions with sumptuous linen covers on the chairs in the breakfast nook or maybe its Egyptian cotton towels with fringing in the powder room - think about how the space needs to function and add in those textures

Tip #4. Add visual interest

There’s something so appealing about a thoughtfully styled shelf, there are so many built in cabinets that take pride of place in a home often framing (or sometimes hiding) a TV in a family room or showcasing personal treasures in a formal living space - look at ways to add some shelf styling on a smaller scale to these smaller spaces - think about showcasing cookbooks and organise them by colour in your butlers pantry, invest in some long lasting containers that will keep your dry ingredients stored safely and beautifully, group products of a similar look together for impact

Tip #5. Find a hero piece

Go ahead and add that gorgeous floating marble vanity to your powder room - it will really pack a punch and have all your guests in awe and the best bit is if your savvy or your interior designer is you may even be able to find an off cut and get it for a bargain price (just don’t tell anyone). The idea here is to have one (sometimes more but be careful not to go overboard) piece that really makes a statement, it doesn’t have to big - maybe its timeless brass tapware or a vintage runner - something that makes you happy every time you see it
